Who sits at this piano

Beginners are welcome. So are children who have never touched a piano, and adults who own one nobody plays.

Coming back after twenty or thirty years is not starting from zero.

Students already playing come to fix technique, read better, or prepare for a grade.

What the first few months look like

For someone who has never played.

  • Hands on the keys in lesson one.
  • Reading both staves, a few notes at a time, never a whole page at once.
  • Hand shape and a relaxed wrist from the start. Bad habits are slow to undo.
  • Counting out loud. It feels silly. It fixes rhythm faster than anything else.
  • One song you chose, running alongside whatever I set.
  • Around ten minutes most days. Little and often beats one long session.

Grades, and doing without them

ABRSM if you want it

I prepare students for ABRSM piano exams, from the early grades upward. I also teach ABRSM Grade 5 Theory of Music, which is the paper required before Grade 6 practical.

Grades are optional. A grade is a deadline. Deadlines suit some players and flatten others.

My own qualification: ABRSM Grade 8 in piano, Grade 5 Theory of Music passed with distinction, and studied toward a performance Diploma.

Beyond the beginning

Intermediate work is mostly three things. Technique, so your hands stop limiting the music. Sight reading, so a new piece is not a code to crack. Theory, so you understand what you are playing.

Pop, film and everything else

Classical is the backbone of the ABRSM pathway and worth learning properly. It is not the only route through.

Film themes, pop songs and pieces you found online get taught here too. A lesson can look nothing like an exam and build the same hands.

The practical part

$35 per half hour, $70 per hour

Invoiced monthly, so there is no term to pay up front. No enrolment fee, no booking fee, nothing for materials.

Lessons run Monday to Friday, 3:15pm to 7:30pm. The last half hour starts at 7:00pm, the last full hour at 6:30pm. There are no weekend lessons.

There is no free trial. The first lesson is a real lesson at the normal price, with no obligation to continue.

The studio is at 24 Westerley Place, Long Bay, Auckland 0630. Street parking is about 20 metres from the door.

I also teach guitar, and singing at beginner level.
